The Reds were 1-6 last week as they were outscored 64-41!  The Reds wasted a lot of runs last week due to their pathetic pitching performance.  The Reds entered this week with a 18-33 record which had them in last place in the National League Central, 10.5 games behind the Brewers.

Top prospect Jay Bruce looking good so far for the Reds

Jay Bruce is the #2 rated prospect in the Reds system according to Baseball America.  The 20 year old lefty swinging outfielder is pounding the baseball in high A ball.  He is 64 for 187 (.342 avg, 1.017 OPS) and he’s scored 37 runs, whacked 9 homers, drove in 34 runs and stole 4 bases.  Bruce does have some things to work on as he’s already whiffed 48 times this season.  Look for Bruce to rise quickly through the Reds system because he looks special.

Closer David Weathers has been outstanding so far for the Cincinnati Reds

David Weathers has been the Reds’ most dependable pitcher and that’s important considering when he pitches.  Weathers has pitched in 19 games this season and he’s 1-2 with 9 saves, a 2.08 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP.  In 21.2 innings, he has allowed 15 hits and he has whiffed 23 batters while only walking 4.  The Reds hope Weathers can keep pitching like he is right now, because they need to start winning more close games.

Kirk Saarloos has been pretty bad so far for the Reds

Kirk Saarloos has been pretty bad for the Reds so far this season.  In 21 games (1 start), he is 0-3 with a 5.09 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP.  In 23 innings, he has allowed 21 hits, walked 11 batters and struck out 13.  Saarloos can start or relieve for the Reds, but he’s good at neither because he doesn’t have major league stuff.  The less the Reds pitch him…..the better.
