The Cincinnati Reds trade Kyle Lohse to the Phillies

Blogged under Front Page, Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Monday 30 July 2007 at 9:57 pm

The Reds took advantage of the Phillies need for a starting pitcher by trading them Kyle Lohse for lefty starting pitcher Matt Maloney.  Maloney was ranked as the Phillies #9 prospect before the season started according to Baseball America.  Maloney has started 21 games in AA-ball this season and he was 9-7 with a 3.94 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.  In 125.2 innings Maloney allowed 117 hits, walked 45 batters and whiffed 115.  The Reds shouldn’t miss Lohse too much no matter who they replace him with.  He started 21 games this season for the Reds and he was 6-12 with a 4.58 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.  He threw 131.2 innings for them and he allowed 143 hits, walked 33 batters and whiffed 80.

The Cincinnati Reds acquire Jorge Cantu from the Devil Rays

The Reds have traded lefty reliever Brian Shackelford, righty reliever Calvin Medlock and future considerations to the Devil Rays for infielder Jorge Cantu, outfielder Shaun Cumberland and cash.  This was an outstanding move by the Reds as they took advantage of the Devil Rays need for pitching.  Cantu hasn’t played well this season for the Devil Rays as he played in 25 games for them and he was 12 for 58 (.207 avg, .501 OPS) with 4 runs scored and 4 RBIs.  However, as recently as 2005 Cantu was named the MVP of the Devil Rays for playing in 150 games and hitting .286 (.808 OPS) with 28 homers and 117 RBIs.  Cantu was another of the low risk/high reward moves that have paid off recently for the Reds.  They hope Cantu will rejuvenate his career in the same way that Brandon Phillips did when he came to Cincinnati.  Shaun Cumberland is a 22 year old lefty swinging outfielder with potential to help the Reds down the road.  Cumberland has played in 99 AA games this season and he is 87 for 354 (.246 avg, .651 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 6 homers, 34 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.  Medlock (4-3, 2 saves, 3.39 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) and Shackelford (0-5, 1 save, 4.96 ERA, 1.44 WHIP) were not big parts of the Reds future so this trade looks good for them.

Reds fans suck

You red fans are the biggest band wagon riding pieces of shit I have ever encountered in the world of sports. The only time you ever cheer is when the Cubs fans come to town and make you cheer and thats coming from your own fans sitting all around me last night. I cant believe you guys actually have a blog considering that all your fans are wearing their Carson Palmer jerseys in June or some red-neck ass UK hat and shirt. Everyone in their seats at the games says “Oh, were not reds fans, my boss gave me these tickets” then when fat Dunn hits a homer they are the loadest most obnoxious fans in the joint. Stick with your team people. You can talk all the trash you want about the Cubs not winning in 100 years, but at least our fans dont give up. You all act like your team has never won and will never win a title. Bottom line is your fans suck. You never deserved  to have Griffey in the first  place when all you did was boo him but now you all Loooooove him. Your pre-game call in show was the funniest thing I have ever heard while I was waiting for the rain to stop yesterday. Some dumb red neck actually thought that you guys would get Josh Beckett for Adam Dunn.  There is only one problem with that, ADAM DUNN SUCKS people! He isnt any good except in your little minds. I hope your little league field of a stadium falls into the river where it belongs. Now go bail your football team out of prison so maybe your lame city can actually go to some playoffs.

The Cincinnati Reds place Pedro Lopez on the DL

The Reds have placed Pedro Lopez on the 15-day disabled list with a broken left cheekbone.  He was hit in the face with a Matt Wise fastball on Wednesday Night.  Lopez has played in 11 games this season and he is 7 for 38 (.184 avg, .462 OPS) with 0 runs scored and 0 RBIs.  The Reds have activated Juan Castro from the DL and he will likely start at shortstop until Alex Gonzalez returns from the restricted list as he is caring for his ill son.  Castro has played in 52 games this season and he is 16 for 89 (.180 avg, .438 OPS) with 5 runs scored and 5 RBIs.
