Jeremy Affeldt was brought in to be a starter this season but he had an awful spring. The Reds then decided to move Affeldt to the bullpen and it has really worked out for them. Affeldt has pitched in 10 games this season for the Reds and he is 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Affeldt has whiffed 14 batters in only 9.2 innings so far this year which shows how great his stuff has been.

The Reds have recalled IF/OF Jerry Hairston from the minors to replace the injured Norris Hopper on the roster. Hairston is off to a hot start with the Reds this season. He has played in 4 games for the Reds this season and he is 7 for 15 (.467 avg, 1.000 OPS) with 3 RBIs and a stolen base. Hairston earned his promotion by dominating AAA competition this season. In 14 AAA games this year, Hairston was 24 for 57 (.421 avg, 1.222 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 3 homers, 15 RBIs and 1 stolen base. At worst, Hairston will platoon in CF with Corey Patterson but he could just beat him out for the full time job if he keeps hitting like he is right now.

The Reds have placed outfielder Norris Hopper on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation. Hopper has played in 15 games this season for the Reds and he is 6 for 25 (.240 avg, .561 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Hopper will probably get another chance with the Reds this season based on his 2007 play.

The Reds have placed set-up man David Weathers on the 15-day disabled list with ulnar nerve irritation in his right elbow. Weathers has pitched in 8 games this season for the Reds and he is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA and a 2.32 WHIP. Weathers will be replaced as the set-up man by righty Jared Burton. Burton has pitched in 8 games for the Reds this year and he is 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. Burton has whiffed 16 batters in only 9.2 innings so he evidentally has the stuff to pitch in the 8th inning. We’ll see soon enough how he works out in his new role.

The Cincinnati Reds have traded 27-year old lefty reliever Jon Coutlangus to the Diamondbacks for 23-year old lefty swinging outfielder Daniel Perales. Coutlangus pitched in 64 games (0 starts) for the Reds last season as a rookie and he was 4-2 with a 4.39 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. The Reds figured that Coutlangus wasn’t going to get much better than he was last season so it made sense to pick up an outfield prospect with moderate upside for him.
