The Reds have placed IF/OF Jerry Hairston on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. This is a shame for Hairston as he has really played well so far this season. He has played in 63 games for the Reds this season and he is 69 for 204 (.338 avg, .863 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 2 homers, 22 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. Hairston will be replaced by 25-year old righty swinging Adam Rosales on the Reds’ roster. Rosales has played in 115 games in AAA ball this season and he was 123 for 425 (.289 avg, .809 OPS) with 68 runs scored, 11 homers, 58 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Rosales has also played in 7 games for the Reds this season and he was 1 for 7 (.143 avg, .286 OPS) without scoring or knocking in any runs yet.

The Cincinnati Reds need Jay Bruce to get it back together

With Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey no longer on the Reds they need Jay Bruce to pick it back up with his bat. Bruce exploded on the scene when he was first recalled from the minors. In his first 7 major league games, Bruce was 15 for 26 (.577 avg) with 12 runs scored, 3 homers and 7 RBIs. The majors appeared to look easy for Bruce in his first week but then pitchers started to adjust to him. In his last 64 games this season for the Reds, Bruce is 57 for 251 (.227 avg) with 28 runs scored, 9 homers and 26 RBIs. Bruce’s overall numbers still look pretty good but the team is in dire need for him to start hitting well again. Bruce has now played in 71 games this season for the Reds and he is 72 for 277 (.260 avg, .738 OPS) with 40 runs scored, 12 homers and 33 RBIs.

Micah Owings is likely the 3rd player getting traded to the Reds for Adam Dunn

25-year old righty starting pitcher Micah Owings is the rumored third player coming to the Reds for Adam Dunn. However, Owings might not be able to make it through waivers so the Reds might not get him until after the season. Owings has pitched in 22 games (18 starts) for the D-Backs this season and he is 6-9 with a 5.93 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. Owings would probably slide right into the back end of the Reds’ rotation next season. If he is indeed the third player coming to the Reds then they got a nice haul for Adam Dunn. Owings has now pitched in 51 games (45 starts) in his major league career and he is 14-17 with a 4.97 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. Owings also is a fine hitter as he is 35 for 112 (.313 avg, .895 OPS) in his major league career with 16 runs scored, 5 homers and 18 RBIs.

The Cincinnati Reds acquire catcher Wilkin Castillo from the Diamondbacks

The Reds have now acquired the first of the two players to be named in the Adam Dunn trade. 24-year old switch hitting catcher Wilkin Castillo is now on the Reds. Castillo can also play any position on the field defensively which will make him a very valuable player in the National League. He was the #14 prospect in the entire D-Backs system coming into this season according to Baseball America. Castillo has played in 104 games in AAA-Ball this season and he is 98 for 386 (.254 avg, .663 OPS) with 40 runs scored, 6 homers, 47 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. The Reds will likely call up Castillo when rosters expand and they will play him everywhere. This was a nice player for the Reds to get in the Dunn trade.

The Cincinnati Reds lose reliever Marcus McBeth on waivers to the Red Sox

The Reds have lost 27-year old righty reliever Marcus McBeth to the Red Sox on waivers. McBeth was not pitching too well for the Reds in AAA and other pitchers had passed him up in the Reds’ system so they won’t miss him. McBeth pitched in 24 games (0 starts) in AAA this season and he was 1-1 with a 6.20 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. McBeth pitched in 23 games (0 starts) for the Reds last season and he was 3-2 with a 5.95 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. McBeth has a good arm but the Reds shouldn’t miss him much.
