The Reds have lost 26-year old righty starting pitcher Edison Volquez for the remainder of this season and most of the 2010 season as he had Tommy John Surgery earlier this week. Volquez started 9 games for the Reds this season and he was 4-2 with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. In two years with the Reds, Volquez has pitched in 42 games (41 starts) and he is 21-8 with a 3.44 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. This is a huge blow to the Reds’ pitching staff both for the rest of the season and most of next year.

With all of the troubles the Reds are having in the outfield Chris Heisey could be getting close to the majors. The 24-year old righty swinging outfielder was the #22 rated prospect of the Reds’ system according to Baseball America. He has played in 100 games in AA+AAA ball this season and he is 126 for 386 (.326 avg, .926 OPS) with 68 runs scored, 16 homers, 59 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. Heisey might be ready if the Reds need him soon.
