25-year old righty swinging Drew Stubbs heads into spring training as the Reds’ starting CF for 2010. He played in 42 games for the Reds last season and he was 48 of 180 (.267 avg, .762 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 8 homers, 17 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Stubbs also played in 107 games in AAA-ball last season and he was 110 of 411 (.268 avg, .713 OPS) with 57 runs scored, 3 homers, 39 RBIs and 46 stolen bases. Stubbs didn’t make any errors in 42 games in CF for the Reds last season while showing good range in the field. He also showed off a good arm as he had 4 assists out of CF for the Reds last year. I think that Stubbs will steal a lot of bases for the Reds in 2010 and beyond but I think the power he showed for the Reds last season was a mirage as he only hit 28 homers in his four seasons in the minors.

27-year old lefty swinging Chris Dickerson will likely be Stubbs’ only real competition in CF this spring. Dickerson didn’t make any errors in 27 games in CF for the Reds last season while showing outstanding range. He showed a good arm in CF as he had 4 assists for the Reds there last year.

27-year old lefty swinging Josh Anderson will battle for a bench spot for the Reds in 2010. Anderson played in 118 games for the Tigers and Royals last season in which he was 68 of 283 (.240 avg, .580 OPS) with 42 runs scored, 1 homer, 24 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. Anderson didn’t make any errors in 32 games in CF last season while showing average range. He had 2 assists while in CF so he has a decent throwing arm.

29-year old righty swinging Chris Burke has a broken finger which will hurt his chances of making the Reds when the season opens. Burke played in 32 games for the Padres last season and he was 17 of 82 (.207 avg, .575 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 homer, 5 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Burke didn’t play any in CF last season for the Padres but he does have a lot of experience there.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE CF IN 2010: C+
